My First Work Made in Spain

While I’m still working in my apartment here in Valencia, Spain, I have managed to finish my first four paintings. These studies will begin a new series called Nasoki; a Macedonian word which translates to “directions”. This refers to the new imagery I am using as well as the departure from the Oblik, Ezero and Preselba series.

Nasoki 4, 2011, acrylic on linen, 18 x 21.5 in, 46.5 x 55 cm

Nasoki 3, 2011, acrylic on linen, 18 x 21.5 in, 46.5 x 55 cm

Nasoki 2, 2011, acrylic on linen, 18 x 21.5 in, 46.5 x 55 cm

Nasoki 1, 2011, acrylic on linen, 18 x 21.5 in, 46.5 x 55 cm

I am also currently in the process of finding a studio to work in. I have been to a few spaces including Sporting Club Russafa, Color Elefante and Galleria Espacio all in the Russafa neighborhood of Valencia. These are all co-op studios where several artists share one large space. Most of these studios also have exhibition spaces at the front at street level. Now that I have finished the small studies above, I plan to translate these new ideas to a larger scale and hopefully make that work in a new studio.

  1. The newest directions series is a great next step you are taking – I find a tension though in between this very obvious linear motif + blurred outline that sort of “undoes” the linearity if this makes any sense. I don’t on a pure aesthetic level click with it the way I do the Preselba series because it intuitively doesn’t make sense to me. It catches me off guard more on an intellectual level. Where is this going? is this “tension” intentional? Very unexpected. I’m curious to see where this series will take you!
