Evolution of a Painting

I often get asked about the process involved in making my work. People are as interested in the technical steps employed to make a painting as they are in the meaning behind the imagery. This is why I decided to document every step of my most recent series of “Ezero” paintings to illustrate the layers and reveal the progression of the work. Below is every layer of Ezero 2, 2010 ending with the finished piece. The series is comprised of eight paintings on panel numbered 2-9. I use many layers of thin washes of acrylic paint so that each previous layer is revealed. This layering process allows a third color to be created in addition to the ten or so I mixed myself. Because I’m using a very watery mixture, I have very little time to manipulate the paint before it dries. My technique is labor intensive and each shape requires pushing the paint to the edge quickly to create the translucent shapes with their feathered border. To create this series, I stuck to the same color palette by mixing large batches of paint to keep eight pieces as cohesive as possible.

Also check out a great art blog written by Kate Singleton out of Brooklyn, N.Y. called Art Hound. I was thrilled to be her “Artist Crush” for September 22nd. I really admire the artists she features and was flattered to be included in her blog. I really like the fact that she helps people collect affordable, great art and shows how art and design go together.
